Earning your high school equivalency diploma in Illinois could cost less and not require any computer skills in 2016. The Illinois Community College Board last week approved two additional high school equivalency assessments people can take to earn their diplomas. In addition to the GED test, Illinois residents will have the option of taking the Test Assessing Secondary Completion or the High School Equivalency Test — both of which have a pencil-and-paper option, unlike the GED. Josh Beneze, associate director for adult education and workforce for the Community College Board, said the organization is eyeing January as a tentative time to implement all three tests.
The board plans to work with testing centers and prep centers the rest of the year to get them ready, he added. Illinois saw a huge drop in the number of people taking, and passing, the GED in 2014 after the test was overhauled. Instead of costing $50, it cost test-takers $120. It also had to be taken online for the first time and was considered to be much harder because it was aligned to Common Core learning standards. Karen Hunter, Illinois Community College Board executive director, said the board decided it needed to look at finding alternative tests because it became too expensive and could only be taken on a computer. Hunter said the board is still negotiating with the two companies — McGraw-Hill Education and Educational Testing Service — over how much the test will cost residents, but she expects their versions to be more affordable than the GED. However, neither test will be any less challenging, she added.

'Both tests were vetted through our system and met our standard for high school equivalency, and they are in alignment with curriculum,' Hunter said. Each test will be under a one- to two-year evaluation period.
